The proper use of marine incinerator on board is to properly handle all kinds of garbage on board, minimize the pollution of marine environment and air pollution caused by improper incineration. It is also the basic requirement of Annex V and VI of MARPOL 73 / 78 convention.

Many solid wastes, such as paper, rags, plastics, etc., and many liquid wastes, such as oil residue, invalid lubricating oil, etc., will be produced during the operation of the ship. If these wastes are thrown into the sea, they will cause damage to the marine environment, so marine incinerators will burn all the solid and liquid wastes.

On board incinerators are mainly used for the treatment of residual oil and waste oil, as well as the treatment of sludge and other solid waste produced in sewage treatment plants.

Incinerator is a kind of equipment specially used for burning waste oil from main engine, auxiliary engine, oil-water separator and oil pan of oil pump, as well as most solid waste. Today, the authorities of port countries and the international shipping industry pay more and more attention to the protection of the marine environment and the severe punishment of the illegal discharge of waste oil and garbage. As the person in charge of the ship incinerator, the third engineer, we must master the normal use of the equipment more comprehensively and do a good job in daily maintenance.

Generally, the incinerator has a steel shell lined with firebrick to form a furnace. Solid waste feeding port, dirty oil burner, auxiliary burner and exhaust fan are set around the furnace. The waste oil burner is used to spray dirty oil, sewage and sludge. The burner has three kinds of revolving nozzle type, pressure spray type and gravity drop type. At present, the first two are more commonly used. The auxiliary burner is used to preheat the furnace, ignite and inject fuel oil when the water content of solid or waste water is large, so as to ensure the stable state of furnace temperature above 600 ºC. The exhaust fan ensures that the furnace is under negative pressure and cools and exhausts smoke to prevent smoke leakage and fire. Waste oil tank equipped with agitator can make sewage, waste oil and sludge mix evenly according to certain proportion to ensure continuous combustion. In addition, there are control box, waste oil heating device and observation hole auxiliary facilities.
