Also known as warm heat boiler or waste heat boiler. It refers to a kind of small boiler that uses the heat of flue gas discharged from diesel engine (or gas turbine) to heat water supply to produce steam. The steam produced is mainly used to heat oil and supply domestic steam. On the diesel engine ship, it is installed on the diesel engine exhaust pipe at the top of the engine room, and it is put into operation when the ship enters into normal navigation conditions. The evaporation capacity depends on the power of the diesel engine. It is generally 0.272kg / (kW · h) ~ 0.544kg / (kW · h). Generally, the evaporation capacity of waste gas boiler is about 2T / h. When the steam generated is only used for heating fuel oil, lubricating oil and domestic steam, the working steam pressure is 0.5mpa-0.6mpa. The exhaust gas boiler installed on the exhaust flue of diesel engine can not only utilize the waste heat of flue gas, but also play the role of noise elimination. The form of waste gas boiler is mostly vertical tube type smoke tube boiler or coil type forced circulation boiler. It can be used as a steam supply equipment alone or as an additional heating surface of an oil fired auxiliary boiler. There are also exhaust gas boiler and oil fired auxiliary boiler installed in a furnace shell, known as waste gas oil boiler. Because the exhaust temperature of diesel engine is below 400 ºC, even if the exhaust gas boiler loses water, it will not cause the heating surface to burn out. If necessary, dry burning is allowed.

Exhaust gas boiler is used to absorb exhaust heat of diesel engine and produce steam when the ship is sailing. It can only produce saturated steam, and its evaporation capacity mainly depends on diesel engine load and exhaust parameters. The heating area of exhaust gas boiler is the main technical index. Although the application of exhaust gas boiler can save fuel oil and play a certain role in noise reduction of diesel engine exhaust, it will also increase the exhaust back pressure of diesel engine and reduce the diesel engine power. Therefore, the exhaust gas boiler selected for ships should not exceed the allowable value of diesel engine back pressure increase.
